Principal’s Welcome

Principal’s Welcome

Welcome to Monash Special Developmental School which we believe is a dynamic and vibrant learning community.  At Monash we have a highly motivated and dedicated team of staff who are committed to supporting all our students to reach their individual potential.

Our core values are promoted through the teaching of our school wide expectations:

  • Do your best work
  • Help others succeed
  • Respect your school

Students are taught in an atmosphere that fosters responsibility to learn, succeed, co-operate and practise self-discipline.  Class groupings allow for small home groups and maximum interaction between teacher and student.  In all classes the emphasis is on the individual to achieve and progress through meaningful and purposeful activities.  Our small class sizes ensure excellent grounding in English and Mathematics.  Specialist programs are offered in Art, Music, Swimming, ICT, Library, Bike Education and Physical Education.

The school provides an alternative education option for students aged between 5 and 18 years. who have an intellectual disability.  Many of our students have an additional co-morbid diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, physical disability, visual or hearing impairment.  School aged children are eligible to attend school 5 days per week between the times of 9am and 3pm.  Some students are dual placed and attend a mainstream primary/secondary school as well as Monash SDS.

In addition Monash SDS provides an Early Education Program for preschool children with developmental disabilities ranging in age between 2 years 8 months and 5 years.  These children may attend the program up to 2 days per week.

The school provides an alternative education choice and parents seek the programs offered by Monash which reflect:

  • A safe and comfortable environment
  • A strong commitment of staff, parents and community
  • A personal and family-orientated atmosphere

The school is strongly supported by parents and enjoys co-operation between parents, staff and students.  We have an active School Council on which parents are encouraged to become involved.

Learning is designed to develop knowledge and skills for life.  At Monash SDS, we welcome your participation in the education of your children.  We believe that children develop more meaningful and positive attitudes to school and learning when parents and teachers work as a co-operative team to ensure the very best educational outcomes for your children.  The teaching staff and therapists provide a rich curriculum and therapy base with our programs reflecting the school’s focus on providing students with a broad range of experiences.

On behalf of the staff, I look forward to sharing an enjoyable and exciting time with you as your children develop a love of learning and an understanding of respect for themselves and others at Monash SDS.
