Welcome to the Secondary Section of Monash Special Developmental School. Our program is designed to support students aged 12 to 18 years with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or multiple disabilities. We are committed to providing an inclusive, supportive, and personalised learning environment where each student is encouraged to achieve their fullest potential, both academically and socially. Our dedicated team of educators works collaboratively with families to ensure that every student receives the care and attention they need for a successful and fulfilling school experience.
We believe that every secondary student deserves an individualised learning journey, one that is tailored to their unique strengths, needs, and goals. Our focus is on preparing students for life after school by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead fulfilling lives. This includes developing skills in areas such as personal care, budgeting, cooking, work readiness, and work skills, all of which are designed to help students reach their fullest potential, whether that means greater independence or better integration into community services and supported environments.
For students aged 12 to 15 years, we offer a comprehensive curriculum aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, covering essential areas such as English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, Science, History, Geography, Technologies, and Personal and Social Capabilities. Specialist programs such as Swimming, Music, Physical Education, and Bike Education are also incorporated into the learning experience, while our camp program, which includes day trips, overnight stays, and a three-day camp, offers valuable opportunities for social development and independence.
We are proud of the positive partnerships we have within our local community, including collaborations with organisations such as Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army, and Special Olympics. These partnerships provide students with real-world opportunities to engage with their community, develop important life skills, and experience the value of giving back. These experiences further support our goal of preparing students for community involvement and post-school life.
A key part of our approach is supporting students and their families in planning for life after school. We host annual Post-School Options Evenings and Tour Days, where families can explore a variety of post-school opportunities. During these events, we help families find the right placement for each student, whether that involves adult services, supported employment, further education, or community services. Our goal is to ensure that every student transitions to a meaningful post-school path that aligns with their individual needs and aspirations.
Regular Student Support Group Meetings (SSGs) between staff and parents ensure that learning priorities are addressed and individual goals are developed. Written reports are provided twice a year, and regular assessments are conducted to monitor progress and ensure the best outcomes for each student.
For students aged 16 to 18 years, we continue to build upon this individualised approach to focus on preparing them for the transition from school to adult services, further education, supported employment, or community services. The core curriculum includes English/Mathematics, Personal and Social Development, and Community Engagement. Students also have access to a range of Pathways electives, including Hospitality, Horticulture, Sensory Skills, and Industry-Related Skills, which equip them with practical, transferable skills for post-school life and community involvement.
In the final year, families receive support from school staff to evaluate and select appropriate adult placements, post-school opportunities, or community service options. The program culminates in a graduation dinner, celebrating the achievements of the final year students and providing a meaningful occasion for families, students, and staff to reflect on the progress made during their time at Monash SDS.
