The Junior Secondary Section of Monash SDS caters for students aged 12-15 years, who have a moderate to profound intellectual disability, including students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or multiple disabilities.
Students are taught using the Victorian Curriculum. Areas of learning include:
- English,
- Mathematics
- Health and Physical Education
- The Arts
- Science
- History
- Geography
- Technologies
- Personal and Social Capabilities
Students also have an opportunity to participate in an Electives Program.
All students begin their day in home room and move around to different programs throughout the day then returning to their home room at the end of the day.
Students are also involved in specialist programs such as Swimming, Music, Physical Education and Bike Education. Monash SDS also offers a camp program ranging from day trips, overnight and a three day camp.
Our extensive therapy team which include Speech, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy offer input into classroom programs to meet student individual needs.
Student Support Group Meetings (SSG) are held regularly during the year between staff and parents. These meetings are used to discuss priorities and assist in developing individual goals for each student.
Regular assessment and review of student progress is carried out to ensure best outcomes. Written reports are given twice a year.
Senior Secondary 16 – 18 Years
Our Senior Secondary program is for students aged 16 years to 18 years who have a moderate to profound intellectual disability, including students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or multiple disabilities.
The Senior Secondary Program has been developed to provide a link between school, adult services, further educational opportunities or supported employment. We aim to maximise each student’s post school potential, allowing positive and successful integration into post school options.
The core curriculum consists of English/ Maths, Personal and Social Development and Community Engagement. There are also a number of Pathways electives which include Hospitality, Horticulture, Sensory and Industry Related Skills.
In the final year of schooling, families are supported by school staff in evaluating and selecting appropriate adult placements or alternative opportunities for their child. A graduation dinner is held for our final year students and their families which has proved to be a very successful night and particularly rewarding for students, families and staff.
