Primary School

The Primary section of Monash SDS caters for students aged 5-12 years.  Our aim is to provide all students with the best possible program incorporating DET guidelines and the Victorian Curriculum.

Most students with disabilities can engage with the Victorian Curriculum provided the necessary adjustments are made to the complexity of the curriculum content and to the means through which students demonstrate their  knowledge, skills and understanding. For some learners, making adjustments to instructional processes and to assessment strategies enables students to achieve educational standards commensurate with their peers.

In Primary this is done using an integrated curriculum.  Each year 4 Units of Work will be selected to provide a basis for activities to meet individual student goals.  Unit of work topics are chosen to provide students with opportunities to experience a broad range of curriculum activities.  Students also have the opportunity to be involved in specialist programs for example, swimming, music, PE and bike education.  Monash SDS also offers a camp program for students ranging from day trips to overnight stays.

Our extensive therapy team – Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy offer input into classroom programs to meet student needs.

Student Support Group (SSG) meetings are held regularly during the year between staff and parents.  These meetings are used to discuss priorities and assist in developing individual goals for each student.

Regular assessment and review of student progress is carried out to ensure best outcomes and a written report is given twice a year.

Daily transport to and from school is provided by the department to most families who live within our transport zone.
