The Primary section of Monash SDS caters for students aged 5-12 years who are diagnosed with a developmental delay or disability. Our aim is to provide all students with a highly engaging and individualised program that meets each learners needs and incorporates interests.
Our educational program uses the Victorian Curriculum which provides a clear framework for students in the primary years, focusing on the key areas of English, Mathematics, Personal and Social Capabilities, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, The Arts, and Technologies. All of our students are also involved in specialist programs such as Music, PE, Performing Arts, STEM and a swimming program.
At Monash SDS the curriculum is adapted to meet the specific learning requirements and goals of each student. Teachers use a range of individualised resources, strategies, and technologies to support learning and ensure all learners are provided with a meaningful educational program. In addition, programs implemented are supported with advice of the Monash SDS allied health professionals.
The Monash SDS Primary Program uses an ABA based program called STAR (Strategies for Teaching based on Autism Research). ABA helps children develop their social, academic, self-help and behavioural skills needed to interact with others and to cope with the challenges of everyday life and school. ABA takes the form of a highly structured program designed to meet the individual needs of each child, while building the foundations for life-long learning.
Student Support Group (SSG) meetings are held regularly during the year between staff and parents. These meetings are used to discuss priorities and assist in developing individual goals for each student in the form of an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Student progress is assessed and reviewed regularly to ensure optimal outcomes, with written reports provided twice a year.
