Using the Opportunity

Occupational therapy is about finding ways to assist our students develop skills to participate in life at school and in the community.   We look at incorporating therapy into everyday routines and activities to give students as many opportunities as possible to develop and practice their skills.

During cooking we have been challenging our senses with lots of different textures, smells and tastes.  Students have the opportunity to touch and taste ingredients (when appropriate!) and feedback whether they like or don’t like different foods or ingredients we are cooking with.

We also have opportunities for developing and practicing lots of fine motor skills during cooking – using both hands together for measuring, mixing, pouring, grating, chopping and stirring.  Even cleaning up afterwards!

Of course, the best part about cooking is the opportunity to eat the yummy food we have made!
